What I Watched This Week: 11 May 2014

NEW SHOWS
Louie – “So Did the Fat Lady” (A), “Elevator, Part 1” (B+)
The first episode is another knockout, featuring a terrific performance from the lovely Sarah Baker as the overweight waitress who hits on Louie, then eviscerates him on behalf of all overweight women after he makes the grave mistake of saying she’s “not fat.” The second episode is more typical Louie shenanigans, but it’s got Ellen Burstyn, so that makes up for not being as profound.

Modern Family – “The Wedding (Part 1)” (B+)
It mostly fires on all cylinders, but has a few too many “How are we gonna get out of this?!” situations to make it truly top-notch. It’s the dilution problem the series has always had. Still, I’m excited for the finale.

The Americans – “Operation Chronicle” (A)
An intense set-up for the sure-to-be-explosive finale. Gripping from top to bottom. The show has officially staked its claim as the best drama on TV. Can’t wait to see how the season ends.

OLD SHOWS
The Simpsons (Season 7) – “Lisa the Iconoclast” (B+)
I’m always down for a Lisa-centric episode and even if this one’s not her finest episode, there’s still plenty of great gags (Homer is the perfect town crier) and historical humor (Jebediah Springfield is the equal of William Dawes) and verbal creations (how cromulent).
