Netflix Picks – April 2016

BEST BET – FILM
Boogie Nights (1997) – 4/1
For its first hour or so, Boogie Nights might be the most entertaining movie not to feature explosions. After that, it might be the most depressing movie ever made. Together, they make up a wild, sprawling chronicle of the burgeoning adult film industry in the San Fernando Valley. Paul Thomas Anderson’s arrival to the big time holds up to all the initial hype, and in many ways has improved over time. It’s hilarious, heartbreaking and a hell of work from someone who wasn’t even 30 yet.

BEST BET – TV
How to Get Away with Murder (Season 2) – 4/15
Season 2 is even more absurd than the first, but Viola Davis is as good as she’s ever been, as it becomes apparent she’s closer to a Frank Underwood than an inspiring leader. Plus, there’s the complication of her former flame (Famke Janssen) returning to her life. This is guilty pleasure at its best.
