A Look Ahead at 2013

It’s a new year, and just as we all make crazy resolutions that will be extremely difficult to complete, so do I set some crazy expectations for this site.

In addition to the weekly previews of what’s showing at the cinema and premiering on home video, I’m bringing the My Life in Movies series. I had left at 1992, two decades before 2012. Starting this month, I’ll drop 1993’s entry and keep going from there. It’s highly unlikely I will get all the way to the end by April 8 like I had originally planned, but that’s what happens when you get too busy.

I’ll also be adding a new monthly (or possibly bi-weekly) column tentatively called “The Unseen.” This will feature movies in my DVD and Blu-ray collection that I’ve never seen. I’ve accumulated these titles as gifts or because the prices were too good to be true. Here’s a list of 15 or so films that I have yet to actually watch:

24 Hour Party People (2002, Michael Winterbottom)
• Brazil (1985, Terry Gilliam)
• Braveheart (1995, Mel Gibson)
• Crossover (2006, Preston A. Whitmore II)
• Dig! (2004, Ondi Timoner)
• Fracture (2007, Gregory Hoblit)
• Freaks (1932, Tod Browning)
• The Godfather, Part III (1990, Francis Ford Coppola)
• Henry’s Crime (2011, Malcolm Vinville)
• Jiminy Glick in Lalawood (2004, Vadim Jean)
• Manhattan (1979, Woody Allen)
• State of Play (2009, Kevin Macdonald)
• Synecdoche, New York (2008, Charlie Kaufman)
• Teddy Bears’ Picnic (2002, Harry Shearer)
• Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death (2008, Nick Park)

I’ll also be participating in Pajiba’s Cannonball Read series, and covering the box office report for College Movie Review. It’s going to busy year, but one for which I could not be more excited.

Here’s my expected list of 13 titles I’ll be reading and reviewing for Cannonball Read V:
Fiction:
• 2030, by Albert Brooks
• The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz
• A Visit from the Goon Squad, by Jennifer Egan
• A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy O’Toole
• Terrorist, by John Updike
• Cat’s Cradle, by Kurt Vonnegut

Non-Fiction:
• How Music Works, by David Byrne
• Forgotten God, by Francis Chan
• A Reporter’s Life, by Walter Cronkite
• Columbine, by Dave Cullen
• A Fan’s Notes, by Frederick Exley
• A Year at the Movies, by Kevin Murphy
• Blind Descent, by James N. Tabor
