Sharp Objects – “Vanish” (B+) / series premiere
We’ve seen a lot of this before, but it’s still done very well. Has a lot of issues typical of pilots (even though this was ordered straight-to-series), but still holds lots of promise. Amy Adams already has an Emmy waiting for her in 2019.
The Handmaid’s Tale – “The Word” (B+) / season finale
Its last minute is frustrating for a lot of reasons I won’t get into, but everything that came before is powerful and devastating and shocking. So instead of thinking about that baffling end scene, I’ll be thinking about Serena reading from First John, using scripture for good and not for evil, reminding that the Bible is all about liberation and not oppression.
