What I Watched This Week: 4 Dec 2016

NEW SHOWS
The Simpsons – “The Last Traction Hero” (B+)
Another solid episode in what’s turning out to be a surprisingly consistent season (not that I’ve kept up with it consistently). Lots of clever visual gags and a nice, surprising friendship between Marge and Smithers.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine – “The Overmining” (A-)
I wasn’t crazy about Rosa and Boyle’s storyline, as it felt like a random pairing for some throwaway gags. But otherwise, this was another stellar episode with some great sneakiness by Holt.

This Is Us – “Last Christmas” (A-)
Ah, shit. Any episode that ends with someone flatlining is guaranteed to give you the feels.

CURRENT SHOWS
Pete Holmes: Faces and Sounds (A-)
Holmes has long been one of my favorite comics, and he’s as delightful and personable as he was when I saw him at the Kessler earlier this year. Comics can be brutal, vulgar, political and still be hilarious. Holmes is so refreshing because he is none of those things and is still hilarious.
