What I Watched This Week: 22 Mar 2015

NEW SHOWS
The Mindy Project – “Best Man” (B+) / season finale
Tries to do a lot in a short amount of time, but it does it well. Danny’s cold feet don’t feel like backpedaling. It feels authentic. Marriage is a scary proposition. But that ending? Perfect, but only if we get a fourth season.

Community – “Basic Crisis Room Decorum” (A-)
Community goes back to the “bottle episode” well again, because, honestly, it always works. The cast is really clicking now, but it’s Jim Rash who’s the star of the ensemble right now.

The Americans – “Do Mail Robots Dream of Electric Sheep?” (A-)
A lot going on, but its centerpiece scene, featuring veteran stage actress Lois Smith might be the best 15 minutes this show has aired all season.

CURRENT SHOWS
American Crime – “Episode One” (B-)
Somewhat fascinating, but you can’t truly judge a show by its pilot. Felicity Huffman is extremely grating, but I’m sure she’ll find the nuance in her one-note character. I’m hoping it gets more intriguing as it goes. Still, it’s only 11 episodes.

OLD SHOWS
The Simpsons (Season 8) – “The Canine Mutiny” (B+)
A boy and his dog. An inseparable bond, at least until a much better dog comes along. I love the little touches, like Homer putting on a tie to impress Laddie or the way Lisa trails off into a rant after taking one too many Trucker’s Choice Stay-Alert Capsules. But what really makes this a great episode is the ending, which finds Chief Wiggum “taking care of” an old man’s marijuana by inviting Eddie and Lou over and poorly singing Bob Marley’s “Jammin’.”
