Reactionary Tale: 2012 Golden Globe Nominations

Nothing terribly egregious to report here, other than serious snubs for The Muppets in the original song category. No matter, here are your nominees, with my correct picks in bold.

BEST PICTURE – DRAMA
The Descendants
The Help
Hugo
The Ides of March
Moneyball
War Horse

What I missed: No love for Drive or The Tree of Life, despite their strong showings with critics and audiences in international polls and festivals.

BEST ACTOR – DRAMA
George Clooney, The Descendants
Leonardo DiCaprio, J. Edgar
Michael Fassbender, Shame
Ryan Gosling, The Ides of March
Brad Pitt, Moneyball

What I missed: A Globe nomination usually means nothing, but along with some other key snubs, Gary Oldman could come up short at Oscar time.

BEST ACTRESS – DRAMA
Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis, The Help
Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady

Tilda Swinton, We Need to Talk About Kevin

What I missed: The HFPA being so keyed in to a dark indie drama is a total shock.

BEST PICTURE – MUSICAL/COMEDY
The Artist
Bridesmaids

50/50
Midnight in Paris
My Week with Marilyn

What I missed: Definitely wasn’t expecting a small dramedy like 50/50 to get Best Picture consideration.

BEST ACTOR – MUSICAL/COMEDY
Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Brendan Gleeson, The Guard

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 50/50
Ryan Gosling, Crazy Stupid Love
Owen Wilson, Midnight in Paris

What I missed: The HFPA skewed younger this year, and that’s OK with me.

BEST ACTRESS – MUSICAL/COMEDY
Jodie Foster, Carnage
Charlize Theron, Young Adult
Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids
Michelle Williams, My Week with Marilyn

Kate Winslet, Carnage

What I missed: Bérniéce Bejo apparently counts as supporting but the two ladies of Carnage are both leads? Huh?

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Kenneth Branagh, My Week with Marilyn
Albert Brooks, Drive
Jonah Hill, Moneyball

Viggo Mortensen, A Dangerous Method
Christopher Plummer, Beginners

What I missed: Guess someone actually liked A Dangerous Method.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Bérénice Bejo, The Artist
Jessica Chastain, The Help
Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs
Octavia Spencer, The Help
Shailene Woodley, The Descendants

What I missed: Didn’t think the HFPA would be so crazy for The Help, nor did I think they’d be so light on comedy in this category.

BEST DIRECTOR
Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris
George Clooney, The Ides of March
Michael Hazanavicius, The Artist
Alexander Payne, The Descendants
Martin Scorsese, Hugo

What I missed: Had no clue anyone would go so nuts for the Ides of March.

BEST SCREENPLAY
The Artist
The Descendants
The Ides of March
Midnight in Paris
Moneyball

What I missed: The Artist is gonna make a clean sweep this year.

BEST PICTURE – ANIMATED
The Adventures of Tintin
Arthur Christmas
Cars 2

Puss in Boots
Rango

What I missed: There’s always room for Pixar, even if it’s the worst thing they’ve ever done. But yay for Puss in Boots!

BEST PICTURE – FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Flowers of War (China)
In the Land of Blood and Honey (USA)

The Kid with a Bike (Belgium)
A Separation (Iran)
The Skin I Live In (Spain)

What I missed: No love for Where Do We Go Now, the Toronto International Film Festival’s people’s choice winner from Lebanon. Guess they favor more traditional foreign films this year?
