The Weekender: Someone please think of the ‘Children’!

Movie of the Week

Men, Women & Children
Jason Reitman made three of my favorite movies of 2000s. He followed those up with the bitingly funny Young Adult. But between this and Labor Day, he’s not having a good year. But I still hold out hope that this will be a well-acted, well-written study of detachment in the age of social media.

Edge of Tomorrow
Edge of Tomorrow
This is the kind of big, loud entertainment I searched for all summer, but didn’t find in the likes of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Godzilla and the other blockbusters. Tom Cruise continues to defy his age and be one of the most magnetic screen presences. Emily Blunt proves she’s one of the top 5 actresses in Hollywood at this point. And it strikes the right balance of humor and darkness. This is the one to see. This is the one to get.
