Streaming Picks: February 2024

All titles premiere on the first of the month, unless otherwise noted.

FILM
Top Pick
Past Lives – Paramount+ with Showtime 2/2
The Best Picture nominee has gotten rave reviews for more than a year now, but still has been seen by far too few. Celine Song’s directorial debut was one of my top 10 films of 2023, and an achingly poignant love story.

Spotlight Collection
Dario Argento Collection – AMC+ 2/2
In conjunction with the new retrospective documentary Dario Argento Panico (which premieres the same day), Shudder is expanding their library of the Italian horror master’s films. From true gialli like The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Deep Red and Opera to more surreal scares in Phenomena and Inferno, there’s plenty to enjoy here.

TELEVISION
Top Picks
Curb Your Enthusiasm (Season 12) – Max 2/4
God Save Texas – Max 2/27
The long-threatened final season of Curb is here. There’s no telling what shenanigans Larry David will get up to, but it will be hard to top last season’s incident at a Holocaust memorial.

As a Texan, I’m intrigued by God Save Texas, which borrows its title from a Lawrence Wright book, but lets three filmmakers examine causes important to them, including the prison-industrial complex, the oil industry and the culture of the state’s large Mexican population.
