The Weekender: Mmmm…. ‘Drop’!

Movie of the Week

The Drop
James Gandolfini, in his final performance, joins the always terrific Tom Hardy in this Dennis Lehane adaptation. Hardy plays a bartender in over his head with the mob. It sounds pretty standard, but Lehane (Mystic River, Shutter Island) knows how to elevate his gangster material into Shakespearean tragedy.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Despite adhering to Marvel’s prescribed third act (stopping a big spaceship from destroying the world), Captain America: The Winter Soldier is arguably the franchise’s finest work to date, featuring terrific acting, superb action and a ’70s conspiracy vibe. Directors Anthony & Joe Russo, mostly known for their comedy work, simply haven’t gotten enough credit.
