I’ve been wanting to revisit some of Wes Anderson’s work now that The French Dispatch has finally come out. Rushmore (filmed in Texas!) might actually be my favorite, featuring dynamite performances from Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray.
Passing is one of Netflix’s big awards contenders. Based on the classic novella, Rebecca Hall makes her directorial debut. Advance word is that Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga are giving their best performances to date.
If you somehow missed the biggest movie of 2021, Disney+ is dropping it a little early for their made-up “Disney+ Day.” While the big finale is typical CGI nonsense, the rest of the movie is quite clever and fun. Plus, when you’ve got Tony Leung and Ben Kingsley, it’s hard to go wrong.
Finally, if you’re up for it, The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain is harrowing, vital viewing. Based on an actual police killing, this isn’t an easy watch, but extremely well-done.

Two of my favorite shows of 2020 are back on Hulu with new seasons that look just as hilarious as they were last year.
Hawkeye may be the first of the Disney+ MCU shows I actually watch, as it’s based on Matt Fraction and David Aja’s terrific run on the show. But we’ll see if the machinations of keeping the MCU going interfere with great source material.
And How To with John Wilson was one of 2020’s most pleasant surprises. Last season’s finale is one of the essential documents of life during COVID-19, and it will be interesting to see if this new seasons addresses that all, or moves on to more human weirdness.
