Streaming Picks: May 2023

Programming Note: On Tuesday, May 23, HBO Max will become Max. Warner Bros. Discovery has promised a seamless transition, so theoretically anything added to HBO Max this month will also be on Max thereafter. But there’s always a possibility some titles may not be available on the new service.

FILMS
Top Picks
Babe and Babe: Pig in the City – Prime Video 5/1
A Man Called Otto – Netflix 5/6
There’s no way to recommend these films without sounding corny, so here goes: The two films about the “Sheep-Pig” and this remake of the Swedish sensation are about the beauty of life, even in the dark moments. They’re all lovely, mostly family-friendly and feature terrific performances.

NEW SHOWS & SPECIALS
Top Picks
The Great (Season 3) – Hulu 5/12
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson (Season 3) – Netflix 5/30
Tony McNamara’s historical satire continues to be as sharp as ever. Each season feels like it will be the last, but I’ll keep watching it as long as Hulu wants to foot the bill.

Tim Robinson’s sketch comedy felt like a cult favorite after its first season, and now feels like it’s everywhere. Tim’s even in Dodge commercials now! But even if the show picks up new viewers who have enjoyed out-of-context clips on TikTok and Instagram, they’ll likely be baffled by some of the show’s more out-there humor. I can’t wait.

Other Recommendations
Class of ’09 – Hulu 5/10
Muppets Mayhem – Disney+ 5/10

OLD SHOWS
Top Pick
Documentary Now! (Season 4) – Netflix 5/9
Absent Bill Hader and with Fred Armisen barely present, the show still manages to find incredibly hilarity in the mundane and outlandish, parodying Werner Herzog and My Octopus Teacher.

Other Recommendations
Freaks and Geeks (Complete Series) – Prime Video 5/4
George Michael: Live in London – Paramount+ 5/31
